At the highest level, Shiva is seen as something without a definite form, infinite, above everything, and never changing.
Shiva has different forms, some kind and some scary.
In-kind forms, he’s shown as a wise Yogi who lives a simple life on a mountain called Kailash. He’s also shown as a family man with a wife named Parvati and two kids, Ganesha and Kartikeya. In scary forms, he’s often shown defeating demons.
Shiva is also seen as the god who watches over yoga, meditation, and the arts. He goes by many names like Mahadeva, Pashupati, Bhairava, Vishwanath, Bhole Nath, Shambhu, and Shankar. Shiva is known for dancing, too, and is called Nataraja, the Lord of Dancers. Hindus show their respect to Lord Shiva by keeping a special place for him in temples, usually in the form of a Shivling.
People believe that chanting a special prayer called a Shiva Mantra can help get rid of obstacles and bring good luck. It’s also called the Raktha Kavach Mantra.
