One morning, an old potter from a nearby village came to the market.
He had worked many months making clay pots. After selling them, he earned a few silver coins. He wanted to buy grain for his family.
Before buying, he became thirsty.
He went to the well to drink water. Carrying money while walking worried him. So he asked the merchant, “Sir, please keep my coin pouch safely. I will return soon.”
The merchant smiled kindly.
“Of course,” he said. “Your money will be safe with me.”
The potter thanked him and left.
The moment he went away, the merchant opened the pouch.
His eyes shone. “These coins are clean and bright,” he thought. “If I take a few, the old man may never know.”

The potter walked to the palace.
King Krishnadevaraya listened to the problem. He then called Tenali Rama.

“These weights are hollow,” he said calmly. “They are filled with black sand. That makes them lighter. The merchant cheats customers daily.”
The court gasped.
The merchant started shaking.
Tenali continued, “A person who cheats customers can easily steal coins from a pouch too.”
The king looked stern.
“Tell the truth,” he commanded.
The merchant fell at the king’s feet.
“Yes, Your Majesty! I removed the coins,” he cried. “Greed made me blind.”
The potter looked relieved.
The king ordered, “Return the coins and pay extra as punishment.”
The merchant quickly obeyed.
He gave back all the coins and extra money to the potter.
The potter’s eyes filled with tears of happiness.
“Thank you, Maharaj. Thank you, Tenali Rama,” he said gratefully.
Tenali Rama smiled kindly.
“Money earned by cheating never stays long,” he said. “But honesty brings respect forever.”
From that day, the merchant stopped cheating. He used correct weights and became fair.
And the people once again praised Tenali Rama’s clever mind.
